When different technical disciplines come together, students of the BUT can "dabble" in medicine. Four PhD students are researching the circulatory system by controlling a peristaltic pump that replaces the human heart in the laboratory. They want to better understand the influence of pathologies on the behaviour of the cardiovascular system, which can help early diagnosis and also reduce blood cell damage in patients connected to a pulmonary bypass or ECMO machine.
A total of four PhD students are working on the year-long peristaltic pump research: Jiří Jagoš, Jiří Kohút and Martin Formánek from FME. Jan Kohút, who is studying for his PhD at the Faculty of Information Technology, is working on neural networks.
As the students point out, such complex research would not be possible without the cooperation of people from different disciplines. In addition to the fact that each of the foursome is an expert in a different field, they also collaborate with experienced colleagues or directly with doctors.
