Professor Jiří Jaromír Klemeš, from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering BUT, has been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2020 list from Clarivate Analytics. This highly anticipated annual list identifies researchers who have demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for the field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index. Professor Jiří J Klemeš first appeared in the top ranking in 2018.

Professor Jiří Klemeš has extensive foreign experience. He spent many years at universities in the UK and Hungary, and also as a Distinguished Visting Professor in Slovenia, Poland, Kazakhstan, Romania, Malaysia and China. He returned to his Czech alma mater in 2017 to lead the team in the Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory (SPIL) which is located in the faculty´s R&D Centre NETME. His research is focused on sustainability, addressing the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gases as well as other emissions. “Our main goal is to achieve unique and practically usable knowledge that will contribute to the solution of increasing the efficiency of the process and energy industry“ Prof Klemeš explained.

Thanks to the Professor´s international reputation, the SPIL scientific conference has also received a great deal of attention. Although this year's event took place online due to the epidemic situation, it has attracted scientists from all over the world. "We accepted, after reviews, 328 registered participants from 56 countries and very many prestigious institutions, such as Oxford University, Carnegie Mellon, The University of Manchester, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, De La Salle University, Manila, Technische Universitaet Berlin, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Sapienza University Rome, Vienna University of Technology, Kharkiv National Politechnic University, University of Barcelona, Japan National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai, National Taiwan University, Texas A&M and Ontario Technical University, to mention a few. I am convinced that this conference will contribute to a further increase in the international reputation of our faculty and the entire BUT” declares Prof Klemeš.

In the 2020 ranking, 6,167 researchers from more than 60 countries and regions have been recognised. For the purposes of its analysis, Clarivate recognises 21 basic scientific disciplines, and in the last two years has also recognised the category of "cross-field performance" for researchers with an extraordinary impact on scientific knowledge outside its own field of study.
