On the evening of Wednesday 13 March, the Werner von Siemens Prizes for 2023 were awarded to the best students, young scientists and teachers. This year's FME has two awardees among the laureates: mathematician Miloslav Druckmüller was awarded as the best pedagogical worker and doctoral student Marek Kollmann received the award for his thesis on Smart Infrastructure and Energy.
Professor Miloslav Druckmüller of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Brno University of Technology received the Werner von Siemens Prize for 2023 as the best pedagogical worker. "His way of teaching is characterized by a dialogue with students and an effort to involve them in solving a given problem during the lecture. Students have long rated him as one of the best teachers on the Faculty and at the entire University. The socially important activities of Prof. Druckmüller also embrace popular science lectures, of which he has given hundreds, both in the Czech Republic and abroad," said the organizers of the competition.
The Werner von Siemens Prize for the best graduate thesis on the topic of Smart Infrastructure and Energy was awarded to Marek Kollmann of the Institute of Process Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for his diploma thesis entitled Planning of Heat and Electricity Production in a Waste-to-Energy Facility Using Machine Learning.
The third awardee from BUT was Veronika Kamenská of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, who received an award for overcoming obstacles in her studies.
The Werner von Siemens Prize has been organized for 26 years by the Czech Siemens in partnership with prominent representatives of universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, who are also guarantors of the individual categories and participate in the evaluation of the best works. This year's independent juries included 60 experts, and representatives of both academia and non-profit organizations. The juries chose 20 winners out of 496 applications, who shared the prize of one million CZK. Of the total number of applicants, 29% were women, and 25% of the awardees were women. The first place in the number of awards was won by the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Brno University of Technology with three awards ranked in the imaginary third place.
