English in Aviation

FSI-DLA Acad. year: 2018/2019 Summer semester

English in Aviation makes the students acquainted with the terms of meteorology, aircraft and their equipment, aerodromes, air traffic. Practising 4 main language skills in common English, based on the gained knowledge of grammar and vocabulary,is also an integral part of the course.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Gaining knowledge about main parts of aircraft, its engine, instrument equipment, navigation and flight instruments, manoeuvres, meteorology, aerodromes, and air traffic control. Making familiar with different language structures, used only in aviation.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic terms of aerodynamics, main parts of aircraft and their functions.
Communication in common English about customary everyday situations.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for obtaining the course-unit credit:
Active participation in the course. To reach min. 18 points (from 30 possible) in a written test.

The exam is written (80%)and oral (20%).
1. written part – maximum 80 points. When a student reaches less than 40 points, he fails.
2. oral part – only successful passing of the written part enables the student to sit for
the oral part of the exam.
– interview with the examiner within the presented grammar and terminology.

Aims

The aim is to make the students familiar with the basic terminology of air traffic, air traffic control and aircraft in such an extent that enables them to apply their knowledge in practice. Another task is to improve their knowledge and ability of communication in common English.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

When a student does not fulfil the conditions for obtaining the course-unit credit,
the teacher may (in justifiable cases) state compensatory conditions.
