Course detail

Thermal Turbines II

FSI-LT2 Acad. year: 2018/2019 Winter semester

The course extends the knowledge of the physical processes in the transformation of thermal or pressure energy into mechanical power, and vice versa, by thermal turbines and turbo-compressors, acquired in previous courses. The lectures are concerned with the determination of basic parameters and design concept of a machine, detailed design calculations and the design of the whole machine, and important details in the design. Students will learn how to link together energy, technical, operational, economic and environmental demands in the machine design.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for working out the documentation in the turbines design including optimal thermal and economic calculations.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of energy sources, steam turbines and boilers.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course credit requirements: active participation in the exercises and delivery of a project for the assigned topic before the stated deadline. Examination: written part consists of questions and numerical tasks, oral part is a discussion on a given topic.

Aims

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with problems of designing big and small thermal turbines and turbo-compressors.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in the exercises is systematically controlled.
