Course detail
Chemistry
FSI-WCM Acad. year: 2019/2020 Winter semester
The course is focused on basic knowledge of chemistry necessary for area of material engineering. Main focus is on understanding of basic interactions on atomic level and related basic material; properties, connections among structures, bonding and thermodynamics are demonstrated. Lectures give an overview of elementary principles in material science (especially a material selection) and related technical applications.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students will be able to apply gain knowledge during continuing Master program, which is focused on material engineering, as well as during solving of specific industrial problems related to chemistry. The course if focused on terminology and basic relations in chemistry.
Prerequisites
Elementary knowledge of high school chemistry is expected.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is based on explanation of fundamental principles and theories is chemistry. Complementary group exercise are part of the teaching process.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Final exam evaluates theoretical knowledge and its implications for problems in material science, which are related to chemistry. Exam is partially written and oral; student will randomly select questions and the written part is before the final oral part.
Aims
The aim of the course is to explain similarities and differences, among basic group of materials such as metals, glass, ceramics, and polymers. Theoretical lectures will be supported by short group training, which should help students to answer homework questions. Furthermore, the training will give students good practice in chemistry.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Credits will be awarded only if students attends all group trainings and after completion of assigned tasks. In justified cases the compensatory conditions may be given if a student did not enter a group training.
