Materials Selection and Performance

FSI-WUV Acad. year: 2019/2020 Summer semester

The following topics are dealt with:Introduction to the materials selection process. Performance criteria. The main standpoints of materials selection and their mutual interaction. The relation between material, technology and design. Algorithms for the selection of materials and technology. Economic efficiency of the selection (cost of material and production, power and raw-material demands), production technology and materials selection, impact of materials selection on the environment in the production and application cycles. Selection based on decisive material properties. Tools for materials selection and its formalization. Computer-aided materials selection. Performance of advanced materials.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with factors affecting materials selection and of procedures facilitating optimized materials selection. Relation between materials properties, technology and design (functionality and performance parameters of the product) and performance of engineering materials, including the latest materials. They will aquire the competence to work with databases and expert systems.

Prerequisites

The course completes the studies of materials engineering and is built up on the knowledge obtained by students in this specialization. A prerequisite of taking this course is therefore a very good knowledge of materials sciences in their widest scope as obtained in the course of their BSc studies and, in particular, when studying MSc specialization.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit requirements: a set of worked out assignments and attendence at exercises.Absence is made up for writing a report on assigned task.
Examination: written and oral parts

Aims

The coarse objective is to culminate materials engineering education, to summarize, broaden and amplify the knowledge of structural materials and their performance, to point out the relation between optimum materials selection and factors that have to be considered in the selection, and to provide information on methods for optimizing the selection of materials.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at exercises. Absence is made up for by writing a report on an assigned task.
