English 4 for Combined Type of Study

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also deals with ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at intermediate level.
Prerequisites
Course is intended for students within the combined study programmes who are familiar with the language at the pre-intermediate level / A2 (CEFR) as minimum. They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding secondary school courses and successfully completed the course A3K. It follows up on the grammar and vocabulary learnt.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is intended for the combined form of study, individual work of students is directed by lectures and exercises taught en bloc.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having worked out assigned tasks and passed a credit test. Students' work in the e-learning support of the course is also reflected in the overall course assessment. Altogether it is required to collect at least 36 points out of 60 (i.e. 60%). In case the benchmark of 60% is not achieved, there is a possibility for the student to resit the test. Exam has a written (70 points) and an oral part (30 points) and students are required to collect at least 50% of the points in both parts. The scope corresponds to the intermediate level and the courses A3K-A4K. The aim of the examination is to prove student's knowledge and skills. The student is expected to use the language as an independent user.
Aims
The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations. It is intended to consolidate the knowledge obtained at secondary school and practice all four language skills.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher and is recommended to get the credit.

Syllabus
1. U5: Technology, information. Comparatives and superlatives, question tags. Asking experts. Polite requests. Present and answer questions on your area of expertise.
2. U5: Explain and solve problems. Talk about inventions. Advantages/disadvantages.
3. U6: Real conditionals, hypothetical conditional: present/future, giving news. -ing/-ed adjectives, verb-noun collocations, life events. Talk about emotions, discuss what you would do in different situations.
4. U7: Success: verb phrases. Present perfect simple versus continuous. Present and past ability. Qualifications.
5. U8: Communities, social situations. Articles and quantifiers, relative clauses. Internet, real-world/online activities.
6. Revision.
