The course covers core language and skills that students need to communicate successfully in technical specialisations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures necessary for professional communication at upper-intermediate level.

Prerequisites

The course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at intermediate level (CEF B1).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass this course it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. The maximum score is 50 points and in order to fulfil the credit requirements students must earn a minimum of 30 points. In case this benchmark is not achieved, there is a possibility for the student to resit the test.

Aims

The aim of the course is to teach the language skills needed by university students and company employees in a range of engineering branches.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two seminars.
