Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry

Organic chemistry as a scientific discipline. Structure, bonds and properties of organic compounds. Types of organic formulas, constitution and isomerism. Characteristics of organic reactions, reaction schemes. Classification of organic compounds: hydrocarbons, derivatives of hydrocarbons. Principles of nomenclature in organic chemistry.
Macromolecular chemistry and its place in polymer science. Base definition, conditions of originating macromolecules. Definition and types of monomers. Structure and nomenclature of polymers. Size and distribution of polymer molecules. Aggregation states and supramolecular structure. Step growth polymerization: polycondensation and step growth polyaddition. Chain polymerization: radical, ionic and coordination polyadditions. Copolymerization. Important industrial polymers: production technologies, properties & applications. Rheology and processing of polymers.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course makes easy orientation of students at a choice of diploma project. Getting basic knowledge in the field of macromolecular compounds will enable them to improve their understanding new technological processes applicable in development of modern materials.

Prerequisites

General and Physical Chemistry, General Physics and Thermodynamics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The student's assessment shall involve partly his performance in practice, partly results attained in a written test and a following discussion on topics selected at the examination (lecture notes allowed at preparation).

Aims

The subject makes students familiar with principles of organic and macromolecular chemistry in frames suitable for studying some engineering disciplines, e.g. nanotechnology. The goal of the subject is seen in explaining basic properties of both organic and mainly macromolecular compounds, technologies of production and processing of important polymers as well as their applications in material engineering.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The presence of students at practice is obligatory and is monitored by a tutor. The way how to compensate missed practice lessons will be decided by a tutor depending on the range and content of missed lessons.
