Course detail
Technology of Optical Production
FSI-TOV Acad. year: 2020/2021 Summer semester
The course TECHNOLOGY OF OPTICAL PRODUCTION gives a comprehensive summary of optical production, its specific features concerning finishing of glass and crystallic materials inclusive of the general principles for putting free optics into sleeves, tubes and other mechanical holders. The course is divided into parts according to natural sequence of production, properties and control of optical glass, brushing and polishing substances, optical machines and instruments, production of spherical and aspherical surfaces, specific features of production of precise planar and prism optics, serial production of spectacles lenses, workshop control of optical surfaces and output control of finished optical elements and systems including vacuum evaporation of reflective and anti-reflective coatings. Lessons will be supplemented with a detailed educational audiovisual programme regarding contemporary optical production, or by an all-day excursion to the company MEOPTA-Optika, Přerov, a member of TCI group.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
The students may test their knowledge in seminars where they work with various elements of spherical, planar and prism free optics and get practice with representative optical tools, abrasive and polishing powders. In the end they will test their manual workmanship by the piece-work production of a rectangular or circular matt screen.
Prerequisites
Methods of mechanical drawing, fundamental methods of machining, specific design methods of fine mechanics, basic principles of geometrical optics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Course-unit credit will be awarded only if the student attends special seminars oriented to masterpies of matt screens and delivers two work drawings of spherical and prism free optical elements. It is expected a propsal how to manufacture these optical elements in small-scale and also a delivery of total optical diagram for production of glass spectacle lens. The final mark of this exam will be done as a mean from design documentation part and oral part in the form of colloquy.
Aims
The aim of the one-semester course TECHNOLOGY OF OPTICAL PRODUCTION is to acquaint the students with the differences of optical production with respect to edge working of metals in machine production. They will learn how to specify technical parameters in production of optical elements, and will be made familiar with work processing, fundamental optical machines and instruments, controlling measurement methods and instruments in workshop and in laboratory practice.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Attendance at seminars is obligatory. Absence may be compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.
