Aventics Pneumobil Racing
FSI-0ZP Acad. year: 2020/2021 Winter semester
The course provides a detailed introduction into basic pneumatic systems and their elements. Students will gain practical experience in control design using the Arduino development board and they will enhance their CAD modelling skills, while implementing the pneumatic system in the vehicle construction. Attention is paid mainly to understanding the function of the pneumatic system and the ability to use the acquired knowledge in designing a new construction. The course integrates the knowledge acquired from the theoretical subjects of the bachelor's study of mechanical engineering.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
– Knowledge of the function of pneumatic circuits and their elements.
- Basic knowledge of system control using Arduino.
- Ability to use FEM analyses for simple elements.
- Basic knowledge of CAD methods in Solidworks.
- Basic knowledge of the axles design and other elements of the vehicle steering.
Prerequisites
Fundamental knowledge of drawing documentation, machine design and CAD modelling.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of chosen topics. Laboratory exercises are focused on practical topics presented on the example of pneumatic vehicle.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Course-unit credit is awarded on active participation in the seminars and achievement of assigned tasks carried out on the vehicle and in laboratory exercises.
Aims
Students will gain experience with the development process using an example of a student racing vehicle with a pneumatic drive. They will be able to design a simple pneumatic circuit, including its control using Arduino, and master implementation of the circuit into the vehicle construction.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Attendance at practicals is required. Absence at two seminars is allowed. Longer absence may be compensated for by special tasks according to instructions of the tutor.

– Familiarization with pneumobile vehicle, test drives.
- Analysis of pneumatic circuit of pneumobile.
- Drawing of pneumatic scheme and its verification.
- Design and simulation of pneumatic circuit.
- CAD modelling of basic vehicle components.
- CAD modelling of frame structure.
- CAD modelling of vehicle assembly and drawings.
- Stress-strain analysis of designed parts.
- Design of simple program for pneumobil control using Arduino.
- Testing of vehicle at simple track.
- Practical demonstration of drive systems, analysis of actual control system.
- Diagnostics of pneumatic system – online sensing of pressure, velocity and temperature.
- Application and verification of students knowledge in competition.

- Basic pneumatic components used in racing vehicle, basic physical principles.
- Pneumatic schemas, design of pneumatic circuits.
- Design of pneumatic components, pneumatic accumulators, control valves, safety valves, pneumatic cylinders.
- Theory of racing car construction (steering mechanism, gearbox).
- CAD modelling of components in Solidworks.
- CAD modelling of assemblies, structure of assemblies, constraints, drawings.
- Basics of stress-strain analysis using FEM.
