Noise and Vibrations
FSI-IHV Acad. year: 2021/2022 Winter semester
The following topics will be dealt with: Sources and sound propagation in closed and free areas. Monitoring and reduction of the noise in the living and working environment. Generation of vibrations, sensors and instruments for vibration measurement. Influence of the noise and vibrations to human health condition. Standards and limits. Practical acoustical measurements in common situations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Knowledge of basic physical quantities for description of noise and vibrations in the working and living environment. Basic overview of standards and regulations concerning the measurement and evaluation of the noise and vibrations. Basic information about techniques for decreasing the noise and vibrations.
Prerequisites
Oscillations. Simple harmonic motion. Superposition of harmonic oscillations. Waves. Types of waves: Longitudinal and transversal waves. Plane and spherical waves. Linear polarized waves. Superposition and interference of waves.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
To receive a course-unit credit, a student has to attend all laboratory measurements and to hand over the reports. The exam has 2 parts: oral and written (theory and a solution of a problem).
Aims
The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with problems caused by noise and vibrations so that they will be able to monitor the sound fields and vibrations, to measure relevant physical quantities and apply theoretical laws for their reduction. Acquiring basic knowledge about standards and regulation limits.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
A teacher checks the attendance in labs stated in the timetable. The form and the date of the compensation of missed lessons are specified by the teacher.
