Mass Transfer Processes

FSI-KDP Acad. year: 2021/2022 Winter semester

Mass transfer processes are used in the petroleum, chemical, petrochemical, pulp, pharmaceutical, mineral and other industries. Major portions of investment and operating expenses are associated with one or more separation processes, which are based on mass transfer. This course begins with the coverage of principles that intersect most separation processes: phase equilibrium, diffusion of mass and phase segregation. Next the course contains description of specific mass transfer processes: distillation, absorption, extraction. Attention is given to the drying, crystallization and some membrane processes. Last part of the course is oriented to the design of equipment parameters of these processes.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

In this course the student will be made familiar with the theory of mass transfer and its applications in the design of chemical units. Course is supported with seminars, where many of practical examples are solved.

Prerequisites

Basic knowleges of chemistry, physics, physical chemistry and mathematics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam has a written and oral part. Active participation in calculation seminars is evaluated by the exam.

Aims

The course objective is to make students familiar with the basics of mass-transfer processes.
This is the most important part of chemical engineering.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at lectures is recommended.
The attendance at exercises is compulsory and checked.
Students have access to support texts in czech language in electronic form.
In case of absence, a written record from the missed saminar is necessary to submit to the lecturer.
