Course detail
Technical Measurement
FSI-VTM-K Acad. year: 2021/2022 Winter semester
The course is concerned with basic of metrology and measurement theory in technical practice and basic principles of measuring instruments used in control systems. The students are acquainted with methods of measurement, measuring quantities and their units. Properties of measuring devices are also discussed with respect to their static, dynamic, information and other properties. Special attention is paid to problems of errors and uncertainties in measurement, their analysis and correction. Measurement of technical quantities in everyday practice of mechanical engineering and its automation is resolved in detail. Basic principles and instruments for measuring individual quantities are presented in applications of automation and control, control loop and automation measuring systems above all. The attention is also focused on temperature, pressure and strength, length, flow, humidity, heat quantity, analysis of gases and fluids and various others technical quantities. At the present time, measurements are also presented with the concepts of Industry 4.0, SMART systems and so on.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
General overview of measurement, methods of measurement and principles of measuring technical quantities as well as applying the acquired knowledge to solving specific assignment, ability to design, realize and evaluate the measurement.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge from physics, mathematics, statistics and mechanics, introduction to the theory of the automatic control.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Course – unit credit: participation in laboratory exercises and presentation of selected results. Resulting evaluation up to 15 points is included in the result of the examination, provided credit is to obtain at least 8 points.
Exam: written test of all problems the subject (0 – 15 points), oral exam with written preparation (0 – 20 points). Total the student receives up to 50 points, condition passing of the exam at least 25 points. Classification: excellent (46-50 points), very good (41-45 points), good (36-40 points), satisfactory (31-35 points), sufficient (25-30 points), failed (0-24 points).
Aims
Students will have an overall view of methods and devices for measuring technical quantities and their application including the evaluation of resulting uncertainties.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Attendance in laboratory exercises is monitored; one absence can be compensated for by attending a seminar with another group; next absence is compensated by solving an individual assignment.
