Diploma Engineering Project

The course provides students with an opportunity to work on their master’s thesis. The skills and abilities acquired during the work on the thesis can student later utilize in their mechanical engineering jobs. For this reason, a significant emphasis is placed on self-study and independent work.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn to work independently when solving engineering problems. They will learn how to proceed from acquiring of relevant information to the development of the solution and its presentation.

Prerequisites

Practical knowledge of engineering mechanics, machine design, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and material engineering. Computer skills (the necessary level depends on the topic of master’s thesis).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Independent work of the student under the supervision of the master’s thesis supervisor.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To obtain the credit, the student must have the master’s thesis either fully completed or just before completion at the end of the semester.

Aims

The aim is to create space for the work on master’s thesis and related activities (performing experiments, performing computer simulations, preparing engineering drawings, etc.). Particular emphasis is placed on the ability of students to accurately formulate a problem and propose a suitable solution.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The work progress on the master’s thesis is monitored by the master’s thesis supervisor. Students are obliged to report the progress to their master’s thesis supervisors. The scope and extent of the progress monitoring is determined by the master’s thesis supervisor.

Syllabus

The content of the course is independent work of the students on their master’s thesis under supervision of the assigned supervisors. The scope of work is determined by the supervisor. The work may include, but is not limited to, self-study, analysis of various engineering solutions, engineering calculations, preparation, execution and evaluation of experiments, and computer simulations.
