Sustainable Design

FSI-YSD-A Acad. year: 2022/2023 Winter semester

1. Students will gain an overview of theories related to sustainable design such as slow design, cradle-to-cradle principle, eco-friendly design, motivation and manipulation of people through design and more, they will learn to think about projects in terms of ethics, ecology and sustainability and apply this theoretical knowledge to practical tasks in product design.
2. Emphasis is placed especially on the active involvement of students in classes, a responsible approach to work and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practical tasks.
3. The course complements other courses taught in the field of ID and expands students' ability to approach the solution of design problems.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

– the ability to correctly recognize and define a design problem
- ability to comprehensively analyze aspects influencing the final solution of the problem
- ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice
- the ability to discuss design from a cross-disciplinary perspective
- ability to successfully present the design solution

Prerequisites

Participation in lessons is conditioned by readiness to work on more demanding design assignments, which should be obtained by previous study, and the ability to analyze theoretical foundations, discuss them and apply this knowledge to practical tasks. Knowledge and understanding of the basics of spatial creation, artistic composition and implementation of three-dimensional models is essential. The student must be able to draw and model.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, seminars

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for granting the credit and successful examination: active presence in the lessons, submission of assigned works within the set deadlines. Oral defence of the completed task and discussion over theoretical foundations. For each task design, active approach and processing from the point of view of sustainable design and the level of presentation are evaluated separately.
The final evaluation consists of the evaluation of projects and activities in classes. In total, up to 100 points can be obtained. The resulting classification is determined according to the ECTS scale.

Aims

Students will be able to solve design problems and projects with regard to the philosophy of sustainable design and gain an overview of movements and theories in this field.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars and lectures is mandatory. Classes take place according to weekly schedules. Determining the methods of compensating for missed classes is the responsibility of the seminar supervisor.
