Course detail
Machine Design - Mechanical Drives
FSI-6KT-A Acad. year: 2022/2023 Summer semester
The course provides an overview of machine components used to transmit power and rotary motion, such as gears, shaft clutches, brakes and flywheels. Attention is paid mainly to understanding their function and mastering the methodology used in their design. The course integrates knowledge gained in the theoretical subjects of the bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, especially in materials science and mechanics.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
– Knowledge of the principle, calculation and use of basic transmission mechanisms.
- Ability to apply the acquired knowledge in the design of new machines and devices.
- Ability to solve construction project.
Prerequisites
Knowledge:
- materials science (choice of materials),
- statics (load analysis),
- elasticity and strength (stress and strain analysis),
- basics of design (creation of drawing documentation),
- design of machine parts (bearings, joints).
Passing the course: 4PP Strength of Materials I.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, exercises, self-study.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The course is completed by taking an exam after the previous awarding of the credit.
The credit confirms that the student actively participated in the work during the semester and received at least 20 points out of a maximum of 40 points. The criterion of point evaluation is the degree of ability to solve assigned tasks correctly and independently.
The exam investigates the complex mastery of the subject matter defined in the course card and especially the ability to apply the acquired knowledge independently and creatively. The level of mastery of the issue is evaluated in the range of 0 to 60 points. The student must obtain at least 30 points out of maximum of 60 points.
The exam has a written and an oral part. The written part of the exam is mandatory for all students. It consists of two calculation tasks and one question. The oral part of the exam is voluntary.
Aims
Students will be able to analyze and design basic machine components used to transmit power and rotary motion, such as gears, shaft clutches, brakes and flywheels.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Lectures: attendance is voluntary.
Exercises: attendance is mandatory and controlled by the teacher. Maximum of two absences are allowed in total. In case of long-term absence, compensation for missed classes is in the competence of the course guarantor.
