Artistic foundry

Since its inception, foundry technology has been engaged in the production of art objects in addition to utility items. The subject of artistic foundry deals with the description of foundry technologies that were or are currently used in the production of art objects and also with the analysis of the processes of production of some of the key works of art produced by foundry technology. As part of the laboratory exercises, students will participate in the production of selected art products that will be the content of their semester work.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Theoretical and practical experience with the production of artistic castings.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for successful mastery of teaching in this subject are knowledge and orientation in the following areas:

Methods of production of foundry moulds and cores

Basic overview in the field of moulding mixtures

Students can obtain the required prerequisites, for example, in the courses 2VT, WTC, etc.

Melting furnaces

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught in the form of lectures, which have the character of an explanation of the basic processes of production of art objects. Teaching is complemented by exercises with practical production of artistic castings.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To successfully master the course, it will be necessary to complete practical semester exercises in which selected artistic castings will be made in the form of a semester project.

Aims

Familiarization of students with foundry technology used in the production of art objects. Gaining practical knowledge and experience with the production of specific art objects using selected foundry technology.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in lectures is recommended. Participation in the exercises is mandatory. Controlled participation in exercises. Absence from exercises is solved individually. Replacement of missed hours will be discussed by the student with the course guarantor.

Syllabus

Lectures are prepared in three blocks, where students will get acquainted with the basic methods of production of artistic castings and making moulds. The main area of lectures will be devoted to the production of moulds using natural foundry sands and the technology of precision casting on a meltable model. The lectures will be complemented by pictures and film demonstrations of the production of important artistic castings that were produced in the past.

Syllabus

Exercises will take place in teaching blocks (6 hours), in which students will prepare model equipment and make molds for making selected artistic castings. Subsequently, they will also be present during the casting of castings. As part of independent home preparation or at the workplace of the Foundry Department, students will ensure the finalization of models and the finishing of castings. 


1. Production of artistic casting mold into oil molding mixture.


2. Casting of artistic casting in oil molding mixture.


3. Production of the mold of castings into the core by grinding.


4. Casting of artistic casting in the form at the core.


5. Finishing and refining of casting cast into oil mixture and core


6. Production of wax model of artistic casting


7. Finalization of wax model surface


8. Production of ceramic shell mould.


9. Casting of casting into shell mold


10. Finishing and polishing of casting
