Technical English Exam

FSI-TEN3-K Acad. year: 2024/2025 Summer semester

The exam tests the ability to use language independently at B2 level, with an emphasis on the needs of successful communication in technical fields. The student is required to demonstrate their ability to use the grammar and specialist vocabulary acquired in previous study. The focus is on specific language skills needed in engineering, either in the workplace or when studying (e.g. being able to explain the function of a device etc.).

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of grammar at B2 level and professional vocabulary learnt in the courses TEN1 and TEN2 is regarded as a minimum to pass the exam.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

TEN3 is an oral exam and students are interviewed by the examiner individually. First, student’s ability to discuss topics connected with study or work in their field is assessed. A successful exam candidate must interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, and their pronunciation, range and accuracy of grammar, and use of professional vocabulary must correspond to B2 level. Second, the candidate is required to perform a specific task based on the contents of TEN1 and TEN2 courses (e.g. to propose a solution to a problem, describe properties of materials etc.). In this part, the student must demonstrate their ability to use particular functional language required by the task as well as specialist vocabulary (see TEN1 and TEN2 syllabi). In order to pass the exam, students must earn a minimum of 50% marks.

Aims

The aim of the exam is to demonstrate that the student is able to communicate in English independently at B2 level with the focus on functional language.


A student who successfully passes the TEN3 exam understands the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. A successful exam candidate can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, explain and present various topics, explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The scope corresponds to B2 level and the content of the courses TEN1 and TEN2 (see the courses documentation).
