Course detail

Operation, Maintenance and Reliability of Machines

FSI-EPS Acad. year: 2025/2026 Winter semester

The course focuses on the latest knowledge of reliability with a focus on machinery and equipment. The focus is on clarifying the concept of reliability and its integration into quality, including terminology and standards. Reliability indicators for non-renewed and renewed objects are also discussed. Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA, FMECA) is also explained and implemented using examples from industrial practice.

In the next block, the course focuses on the issues of machine operation and maintenance. Emphasis is placed on the means of maintenance assurance, on the theory of maintenance systems, and on current trends in maintenance. The course is also devoted to the organization and management of maintenance, economics, and evaluation of maintenance performance.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of mathematics and physics at the secondary school level is assumed. Knowledge in this field from previous university studies is also assumed.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course consists of exercises and lectures. Exercise is completed by credit (awarded in the 13th week). To obtain it is required 100% participation in exercises and activity in exercises. Students will work out the individual work in the prescribed range and quality. Based on the quality of the work in the exercise, the student earns up to 30 points for the exam The work must be submitted in writing and checked and recognized by the teacher. The test is realized by written test, student can get up to 70 points from this test, where 30 points from exercises. Evaluation of the test result is given by the ECTS grading scale.

The students’ participation in seminars and activity. 100% participation in seminars is required; in case of absence, the student is obliged to substitute for the missed tuition in a way determined by the lecturer.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of operation, maintenance, and reliability of machines.

Pursuant to the course contents, students will acquire broad knowledge in the field of operation and maintenance of machines, which will allow them to competently engage in solving various problems related to the area in question in industrial engineering and electrotechnic practice.
