History of Design

FSI-9DDE Acad. year: 2025/2026 Both semester

The subject is based on an individual study of design history by particular domains (crafts – arts and crafts – applied art, environmental design – urbanism, scenery design, architecture, garden architecture, exhibition design, interiors, stage design, visual communications design, product design and industrial design) from the origin of crafts, applied arts up to present times. The subject features an actual state of design, contemporary trends and personalities. This subject follows up to history of visual art and design on the magister study of Industrial design.

Entry knowledge

Development of visual arts, arts and crafts and design from the beginnings to the end of the 20th Century (see the history of visual art and design courses within the "Industrial design" specialization).

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

On the base of own analysis projects and studies given from the every topic of lectures to consultations is verify global orientation and development understanding of applied arts, arts and crafts and design, focused to the industrial design. The student works out an article to the given topic and vindicate it in discussion within the final consultation. The exam is qualify with consigment of all given studies and articles. Combined written and oral examination.
The consultations are sattled individualy. The attendance in lectures is recommended.

Aims

Orientation in the history and theory of all domains of design with the accent to present time; the ability of a design analysis and a practical use of the design history knowledges in own creative work.
View of the design history and theory, knowledge about design branches, styles, personalities and their work, and application of the acquired knowledge into both the theoretical and practical creation.
