Original abstract
Due to the continuous development in the production of high-quality impellers, especially regarding the shape of the flow-through channel which defining the parameters of the compressor stages, a combination of machining and welding can be used to increase productivity and reduce the cost of impeller production. Just the electron beam welding (EBW) is suitable method for mass production of not only impellers. A distinct benefit of the EBW method is minimal thermal influence on the welded material and precise control of the entire process. The weld quality when using EBW depends on the correct setting of process parameters, welded material and weld joint design. The combination of these parameters affects the stability of emerging keyhole when the electron beam (EB) is incident on the welded material. Instability is caused by rapid changes of the temperature and pressure inside the keyhole that lead to closure of the keyhole by molten material and the subsequent formation of weld defects. The whole process thus requires the comprehensive solution including both structural and material characteristics.
