Original abstract

Two experimental arrangements allowing loading of two different cylindrical specimens with circumferential notches were used to measure threshold values of the stress intensity factor range and the near-threshold crack growth rates under shear loading modes II and III. Fatigue cracks under shear mode II were kinked while those under shear mode III were twisted. Therefore, all cracks propagated rather under a pure local mode I. Micromechanisms of crack growths under shear modes II and III were evaluated by means of stereophotogrammetry and optical chromatography. The values of intrinsic thresholds under modes II and III were found to be KII,ith = 2,9 MPa.m1/2 and KIII,ith = 4,0 MPa.m1/2, respectively.
