Course detail
Workshop - Experimental Design
FSI-YED-A Acad. year: 2018/2019 Summer semester
On the basis of the knowledge of theoretical, designer, scientific and technical disciplines, the course deals with the design process of an industrial piece of work in unconventional contexts. The focus of the course is a design process of a general problematic with a certain vision to the future, rather than a specific design solutions of a concrete product. For example: the measurement of time in a public space, a bathroom of the future, wind energy, etc. Tasks are processed more freely, without direct link to the current technological options with prerequisite for the development of technology in the near and distant future, but always with respect for the fundamental laws of physics. They develop invention, vision and original approach when searching for a new form, function and content of then designed piece of work through experimental approach.
The course has been upgraded with the support of the OPVK project. "The Studio digital sculpture and new media project", reg. No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0278, is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the statebudget of the Czech Republic

Learning outcomes of the course unit
The students are lead to independent innovative approach to a given project, to searching for new ways and original views on solving design problems. They learn to use creative approach reflected in designing objects in unusual circumstances where theoretical, technical and art-design disciplines blend with highly experimental approach.
Prerequisites
Participation in education is conditional on completion of previous courses. It is assumed, that student possesses knowledge of fundamentals of drawing and sketching techniques, as well as basic experience with creation in the field of industrial design and project presentation, understanding of the basic spatial creation, art composition and realisation of three-dimensional models. Mastering designer’s solution of simpler industrial products is also expected. For the creation is necessary knowledge of modeling programs (Rhinoceros 3D, Cinema 4D, etc.) and graphic programs (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Creative work in ateliers.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 – 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 – 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 – 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 – 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 – 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 – 0 / 4 / Failed.
Aims
The aim of the subject is to develop experimental and creative approach to design using modern creative methods such as brainstorming while looking for new approaches and ideas on a given topic supporting the development of creative personality of designers.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Compulsory attendance at seminars. Education runs according to the week schedule. The way of compensation of missed seminars is specified by the tutor.
