The influence of ellipticity on minimum film thickness in elastohydrodynamic (EHD) elliptical contacts has been studied for six values of ellipticity parameter from 0.48 to 2.82. Thin film colorimetric interferometry has provided detailed lubricant film shapes from chromatic interferograms. These shapes enabled the precise location of minimum film thickness to be found so that its accurate values could be obtained. Obtained results are presented in the form of the ratio of minimum to central film thickness and experimental values for lubricant films down to few nanometers were compared with computational predictions. The minimum film thickness has been found to be the most speed dependent for circular contacts, while for the other ellipticities the values of this ratio changes only little with the rolling speed. As predicted, the ratio between minimum and central film thickness decreases with decreasing ellipticity parameter. It has been shown that there is no single film thickness formula that can be used for reliable estimation of minimum film thickness in elastohydrodynamically lubricated elliptic contacts in the thin film regime.
