BUT-developed micro-channel polymer tubes with 10% wall thickness of fiber diameter, allowing effective heat-transfer represents opportunity to solve new design challenges in unique ways, their lightweight nature, electric insulation, and versatile properties make them promising for various cooling applications. As an industrial partner of this project, Hanon systems company was responsible for selecting specific heat exchangers based on existing products that could be potentially replaced with HF heat exchangers. Hanon systems also provided CAD support, prepared presentations of HF exchangers to automotive customers (Skoda, VW, Audi, JLR, MGP F1), and support from the test lab facility providing machine time of calorimeter’s and material laboratory analyses. The project was aimed to explore the feasibility and performance of hollow fibers heat exchangers and possibility to replace conventional aluminum heat exchangers. By integrating these fibers into vehicle cooling system, manufacturers can achieve substantial weight reduction without compromising structural integrity. The outcomes presented in this publication describe utilization of the hollow fibers, first prototypes were built to prove feasibility, and heat rejection test of each prototype to prove the performance.
